In a major operation against the illegal sale and distribution of banned tobacco products, Tirukoilur Police conducted a series of coordinated raids across the town and its surrounding areas, leading to the seizure of 155 kilograms of banned Gutka and other prohibited chewing tobacco products. The operation forms part of the district police’s ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade of banned tobacco products and safeguard public health.
Acting on specific intelligence regarding the storage and distribution of prohibited tobacco products, police teams carried out simultaneous inspections at multiple locations suspected of being used as illegal warehouses and distribution points. During the raids, officers recovered a large quantity of Gutka packets and other banned chewing tobacco products that were allegedly intended for illegal sale across the region.
Following the investigation, police arrested four individuals identified as Ajith, Thirumalai, Thiruvenkadam, and Vijay on charges related to the illegal possession, hoarding, and distribution of banned tobacco products. The seized contraband was taken into police custody as evidence, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under the relevant provisions of law governing the prohibition of tobacco products.
Officials stated that the operation dealt a significant blow to the illegal supply network operating in and around Tirukoilur. Investigators are continuing their inquiries to determine the source of the seized products, identify additional members of the distribution network, and trace the movement of the contraband across neighbouring districts. Authorities have indicated that further arrests may follow if additional evidence emerges during the investigation.
The police reiterated that the manufacture, storage, transportation, and sale of banned Gutka and similar tobacco products are prohibited because of the serious health risks associated with their consumption. Public health experts have consistently linked the use of smokeless tobacco products to various diseases, including oral cancer, gum disease, heart-related ailments, and other long-term health complications.
District police have intensified surveillance and enforcement activities to prevent the circulation of banned tobacco products in the region. Regular inspections are being conducted at wholesale markets, retail outlets, transport hubs, and storage facilities to detect and seize prohibited items before they reach consumers. Officials have also appealed to the public to report any information regarding the illegal manufacture, storage, or sale of banned tobacco products to the nearest police station.
The successful seizure of 155 kilograms of banned Gutka demonstrates the district administration’s commitment to enforcing public health regulations and dismantling illegal distribution networks. Authorities have assured that similar enforcement drives will continue across Kallakurichi district to curb the unlawful tobacco trade, protect consumers, and ensure strict compliance with the law.
