Kallakurichi Assembly constituency is located in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu and forms part of the Kallakurichi Lok Sabha constituency. The seat has historically witnessed electoral contests involving the major Dravidian parties, particularly the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with regional outfits occasionally playing a role in shaping the outcome. In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,64,140 electors, of which 2,13,719 valid votes were polled. AIADMK candidate Prabhu A won the seat with 90,108 votes, defeating DMK candidate Kamaraj P, who secured 86,004 votes. The victory margin stood at 4,104 votes, indicating a closely contested electoral battle between the two major Dravidian parties. Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,17,252 electors, with 1,78,906 valid votes recorded. AIADMK’s K Alaguvelu secured a decisive victory with 1,11,249 votes, defeating Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) candidate A C Pavarasu, who polled 51,251 votes. The winning margin of 59,998 votes reflected a strong mandate for the AIADMK during that election cycle. Historically, the constituency has also seen DMK victories. In the 1971 elections, DMK’s D Kesavalu won the seat with 38,513 votes, defeating Indian National Congress (Organisation) candidate S Sivaraman, who secured 34,374 votes, by a margin of 4,139 votes. Over the decades, Kallakurichi has remained politically active, with electoral outcomes often influenced by shifting alliances and the broader dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics.
